The harm of
Cleanching & Grinding
Clenching and/or grinding of the teeth is common problem. The precise reason people tend to clench or grind their teeth is unknown but may be linked to levels of daily stress. Many people may be unaware that they clench their teeth, and even more so with grinding which usually occurs during sleep. Over time, clenching/grinding habits may result in excessive wear or even breakage of the teeth, chronic jaw or tooth pain, and headaches. The destructive effects of clenching/grinding habits can be minimized or eliminated with nightly wear of a custom occlusal guard. Occlusal guards are made of rigid acrylic which fit the arch of teeth precisely, providing a layer of protection only a few millimeters thick with minimal bulk.
What to expect when having an occlusal guard appliance made
Having an occlusal guard made is easy, painless, and takes only a few minutes. A digital scan is done of your teeth (no messy impressions!) and within days can be delivered to you. Usually only minor bite or fit adjustments are needed to the appliance when we deliver it.
We take time
to answer your questions
Take a look through our most frequently asked questions to alleviate any confusion you may have about clenching/grinding appliances at Carter | Callaway.
How long will my new occlusal guard last?
A quality custom occlusal guard should last 5 or more years if properly cared for. Keep it away from your dog – they love to eat them.
Does an occlusal guard go on the upper or lower arch of teeth?
Occlusal guards usually are made for the upper arch of teeth but can be fabricated to fit the lower arch of teeth if you wear a nasal CPAP device for sleep apnea at night.
What if I wear an orthodontic retainer at night?
An occlusal guard on the upper arch of teeth can be worn opposing your regular lower arch retainer. Rigid occlusal guards act as a retainer and should prevent shifting of teeth when worn nightly.
Are occlusal guards for clenching/grinding covered by my insurance?
Many dental insurance policies routinely cover appliances for clenching/griding. Our insurance specialists will review eligibility or coverage details when treatment is planned.
